It's been a while since I've updated this blog. I can't really remember how much I've already shared about my cancer. Suffice to say, we spent the summer with me being in and out of hospitals due to first a lateral mastectomy, and then other minor surgeries to remove infected skin and/or an expander meant for breast reconstruction. Ultimately, a decision was made to put off the reconstruction because I needed to heal enough to get chemo.
That's right. After all the breast was removed, sectioned and sampled, they found a tiny, tiny portion of more advanced, malignant cancer. It was concerning to my oncologist for two reasons:
1. It was hiding like a pop up surprise in a larger area of more or less non-malignant ductal carciroma
2. This type of cancer is more prone to spread to nearby areas, causing sarcomas
Still, the new cancer was such a tiny nugget (less than 1 mm) that it made a decision difficult: should we just wait and see what happens, or do a round of preventive chemo? After much thought and discussion with the surgeon, the radiologists, and her peers, she recommended the latter course. It came down to better odds that I would grace her office for a few more months now, vs. me coming back in a year or two and spending a few years in her care.
Well... After enough time having chemo, can liken it as being pregnant while having the flu. All. The. Time. Now, it has been a while since I have been pregnant, but I did already know: this would suck. And it does.
